Sheinbaum highlights the impact of the 2026 World Cup for Mexico
The President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, has expressed her enthusiasm for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which the country will co-host with the United States and Canada. According to the president, this sporting event will elevate the name of Mexico globally.
“It’s a very beautiful project that will put Mexico’s name on high. We also hope that the (Mexican) National Team does very well,” said the president during her daily press conference.
Less than a year before the start of the tournament, which will be held at the iconic Azteca Stadium in Mexico City, Sheinbaum highlighted the capital’s efforts to transform itself into a cultural and peaceful center. She emphasized the importance of the event as a showcase for the country, especially to the global audience that follows football.
The president emphasized that the World Cup is a “very special” event due to its reach, reaching “hundreds of millions” of viewers.
Sheinbaum also mentioned the passion of the Mexican fans, calling it “the best in the world.” The country has hosted other major sporting events, such as Formula 1, demonstrating its ability to host large-scale events.
The president hopes that the opening match of 2026, scheduled for June 11, will surpass the audience of the opening match of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
The 2026 World Cup will take place from June 11 to July 19, 2026, with the participation of 48 national teams, a significant change in the format approved by FIFA.
Mexico will have the honor of hosting the opening match at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City, where the host team will face another team to be defined after the December draw.
The United States will host the most venues, with eleven stadiums, including the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami. Mexico will have three venues: Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Monterrey. Canada will have two stadiums for the matches.
