Max Scherzer Returns with Promising Performance for the Blue Jays

CLEVELAND – In a highly anticipated return, pitcher Max Scherzer proved his worth on the mound this Wednesday, after nearly three months of absence. Despite the Toronto Blue Jays’ loss to the Cleveland Guardians by 5-4 in extra innings, Scherzer’s performance left encouraging signs for the team. Scherzer, who hadn’t pitched since his debut on March 29, where he left due to discomfort in his right thumb, completed five innings. In them, he allowed three runs, struck out four batters and gave two walks, using 83 pitches, of which 55 were strikes.

From a physical standpoint, I felt great today. It felt good to be out there and compete, and maintain my velocity throughout the game.

Scherzer’s start was promising, with a first inning of 25 pitches that included three strikeouts, although he allowed an RBI single to José Ramírez. In the fourth inning, a double by Daniel Schneemann and a walk to Nolan Jones set the stage for a run-scoring hit by Gabriel Arias, putting the Guardians ahead 3-1.

I made a bad pitch. But overall, I felt good. I was a little rusty; I pitched well, not excellent.

This opening was Scherzer’s longest since July 25, 2024, when he pitched six innings with the Rangers. Blue Jays manager John Schneider expressed his satisfaction with the veteran’s performance.

There were a lot of positives to take from this game. Having Max back in the rotation is a very, very good sign for us.

The incorporation of Scherzer in February was key to strengthening the Blue Jays’ rotation. His injury forced the team to try pitchers like Easton Lucas, José Ureña, and Spencer Turnbull, without success. Now, with Scherzer’s return, the Blue Jays hope to consolidate their five-man rotation.
