Santos Alomar Conde, Puerto Rican Baseball Legend, Passes Away

San Juan – The baseball world mourns the loss of Santos Alomar Conde, a renowned former Major League player and iconic figure in the sport in Puerto Rico. The death occurred this Monday at the age of 81, plunging the fans into mourning and leaving a void in the history of Puerto Rican baseball. Born on October 19, 1943, and known as Sandy Alomar Sr., Alomar Conde left an indelible mark on the diamond. His career in the majors spanned fourteen seasons, establishing himself as a benchmark in the field.

“We deeply regret the passing of Santos Alomar Conde, an emblematic figure in national baseball and patriarch of the renowned Alomar family,” expressed the Puerto Rico Baseball Federation (FBPR) through its social media.

Alomar Conde was the father of Sandy Alomar Jr., former Major League catcher and current coach for the Cleveland Guardians, and of Roberto Alomar, second baseman and Hall of Fame member. The FBPR, through its president José Daniel Quiles, extended its condolences to the family, friends, and the people of Salinas, the birthplace of the former baseball player. According to preliminary reports, Alomar Conde was in an establishment in Salinas when he fainted, which caused his death. His Major League debut was in 1964. Throughout his career, he defended the colors of the Milwaukee Brewers, Atlanta Braves, New York Mets, Chicago White Sox, California Angels, New York Yankees, and Texas Rangers. After his time as a player, Alomar Conde served as a coach for the Chicago Cubs, Colorado Rockies, and San Diego Padres.
