SAN FRANCISCO – The San Francisco Giants have announced Tony Vitello as their new manager, according to reports. The American coach arrives at the Californian team after a distinguished career as a university coach at the University of Tennessee.

A New Beginning

Vitello, 47, led the Volunteers since 2018, being fundamental in the program’s resurgence. He led them to three College World Series appearances in four years, including the 2024 national championship, the first in the institution’s history. Vitello replaces Bob Melvin, who was fired on September 29th after two seasons. During Melvin’s time, the Giants recorded a 161-163 record and failed to qualify for the postseason. This appointment symbolizes the beginning of a new stage for the organization, which is committed to the energy, discipline, and leadership of a coach with experience in the development of young talents.

Connections with Tennessee

Vitello’s choice is not random. The Giants maintain strong ties with the University of Tennessee.
  • Gavin Kilen, their first pick of the 2025 Draft, was a key player under Vitello’s direction.
  • Shortstop Maui Ahuna, selected in the fourth round of the 2023 Draft, also played for the Volunteers.
  • In addition, Drew Gilbert and Blade Tidwell, acquired in the trade for reliever Tyler Rogers, were selected from Tennessee in 2022.

Other Candidates Considered

Among the candidates for the position were former San Francisco catcher Nick Hundley, Guardians associate manager Craig Albernaz, Team USA manager Mark DeRosa, and former catcher Kurt Suzuki, who was hired on Tuesday by the Los Angeles Angels. With this designation, the Giants begin a new chapter in their quest to return to the top of the National League West, trusting that Tony Vitello’s leadership and development philosophy will drive a winning culture within the clubhouse.
