MONTREAL, Canada – Briton George Russell took victory in the sprint race of the 2026 Canadian Grand Prix, held at the Gilles Villeneuve circuit. This competition marked a milestone in Formula 1, being the first time this format has been implemented on Canadian soil.

Russell, at the wheel of his Mercedes, demonstrated absolute dominance throughout the race. From the start, he maintained a consistent pace that secured him the sprint victory, the first for him this season.

Lando Norris, also British and a McLaren driver, placed second, followed by the Italian Andrea Kimi Antonelli, who completed the podium in third position.

This result underscores Mercedes’ competitive progress in the championship. Furthermore, Russell adds his third sprint victory in the 2026 calendar, which includes six short races in total.

Antonelli, current leader of the World Championship, added valuable points to maintain his position at the top of the general classification. This achievement also highlights the excellent performance of the German team.

However, the race was not favorable for the Spanish drivers. Carlos Sainz Jr. finished outside the points, in tenth position. Fernando Alonso, on the other hand, had to abandon the race before completing it.

The Canadian Grand Prix will continue this weekend with the qualifying session and the main race, a crucial event in the fight for the 2026 Formula 1 world championship.
