Real Madrid sacks Xabi Alonso and appoints Álvaro Arbeloa as new coach

Real Madrid has made a transcendental decision after its defeat in the Spanish Super Cup final against Barcelona, dispensing with Xabi Alonso as the first team coach. Instead, Álvaro Arbeloa, coach of Real Madrid Castilla, will take the reins of the team. The club announced Xabi Alonso’s departure through a statement, which stated that the decision was made “by mutual agreement”.

“Xabi Alonso will always have the affection and admiration of all Madrid fans because he is a Real Madrid legend and has always represented the values of our club. Real Madrid will always be his home,” the statement says.

Real Madrid
Real Madrid expressed its gratitude to Xabi Alonso and his coaching staff for the seven months of work since his return to the club as a coach. Xabi Alonso arrived at Real Madrid after his successful spell at Bayer Leverkusen, taking charge for the Club World Cup last June. His debut was with a draw against Al-Hilal, followed by four victories in the tournament, before falling in the semifinals against PSG (4-0). In the current season, the team was in second position in LaLiga EA Sports, four points behind Barcelona, qualified for the Champions League group stage and in the round of 16 of the Copa del Rey. The defeat in the final of the Spanish Super Cup, after defeating Atlético de Madrid in the semi-finals, marked the end of their cycle. In total, Xabi Alonso managed Real Madrid in 34 matches, with a record of 24 wins, 4 draws and 6 losses.

Álvaro Arbeloa takes charge

Real Madrid announced that Álvaro Arbeloa is the new coach of the first team. Arbeloa had been managing Castilla since June 2025, succeeding Raúl González. His career as a coach has been linked to Real Madrid’s youth academy, starting in the 2020/21 season with the Infantil A, a team with which he was proclaimed league champion.
