Jurickson Profar Receives Harsh Sanction and Misses the Season

Atlanta Braves’ designated hitter, Jurickson Profar, has been suspended for 162 games after testing positive for a banned substance for the second time in the last year. The news, which directly impacts the team’s planning, was confirmed by sources close to the player. This suspension implies the loss of his season’s salary, estimated at 15 million dollars, and the disqualification to participate in the postseason. In addition, Profar will not be able to represent the Netherlands in the next World Baseball Classic, where his participation was expected.

Profar becomes the sixth player sanctioned with a full season suspension since penalties were toughened in 2014.

This sanction represents a hard blow for the Braves, who are already facing significant challenges due to injuries in their rotation. In March 2025, Profar had already been suspended for 80 games after a positive result for human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG). After signing a three-year contract for 42 million dollars, Profar returned in mid-2025, demonstrating a .245 offensive average with 14 home runs and 43 RBIs. The player, who debuted with the Texas Rangers, had his best season in 2024 with San Diego, setting personal records in home runs and RBIs. With this suspension, the Braves will have to readjust their strategy for the season, while Profar will have to serve the full sanction before being able to return to the field.
