Pittsburgh Pirates Secure Ryan O’Hearn for Two Years

The Pittsburgh Pirates continue to make moves in the offseason market, finalizing a two-year, $29 million deal with versatile infielder and designated hitter, Ryan O’Hearn. Although the team has not yet made the contract official, sources close to the negotiation confirm the agreement. O’Hearn arrives after an outstanding 2025 season, the best of his career, where he set personal records and earned his first All-Star Game call-up. In 544 plate appearances combined with the Orioles and Padres, O’Hearn recorded an OPS of .803 and hit 17 home runs, showing a notable improvement in his walk percentage (10.7%). Defensively, O’Hearn has proven to be a solid player at first base, a position where he has played the majority of his games in the Major Leagues. In 2025, he accumulated a fielding runs value of +6, ranking among the best in his position, in addition to adding +4 defensive runs saved. The player, who will turn 32 in the 2026 season, debuted in the Major Leagues with the Kansas City Royals in 2018. After a promising start, his career had ups and downs before revitalizing with the Baltimore Orioles. Between 2023 and 2024, O’Hearn batted for a .275 average, with 29 home runs and an OPS+ of 120. During the 2025 season, he was transferred to the San Diego Padres, where he maintained his offensive consistency. Furthermore, he showed a notable improvement against left-handed pitchers, with an OPS of .832, surpassing his previous performance. With this addition, the Pirates seek to strengthen their offense and add experience to their lineup for the next Major League season.
