Pittsburgh Pirates Secure Ryan O’Hearn for Two Years
The Pittsburgh Pirates continue to move actively in the offseason market, finalizing a two-year, $29 million deal with versatile infielder and designated hitter, Ryan O’Hearn.
Although the contract has not yet been officially finalized by the team, sources close to the negotiation have confirmed the agreement.
O’Hearn arrives at the Pirates after a standout offensive season in 2025, where he set personal records in various categories and was recognized with his first All-Star Game selection. In his plate appearances combined with the Orioles and Padres, the player recorded an OPS of .803 and hit 17 home runs, also showing an improvement in his walk percentage (10.7%).
In the defensive realm, O’Hearn demonstrated his worth primarily at first base, a position where he has played most of his games in the Major Leagues. In 2025, his fielding runs value was +6, ranking among the best in his position, and he accumulated +4 defensive runs saved.
The player, who will turn 32 in the 2026 season, debuted in the Major Leagues with the Kansas City Royals in 2018. After a promising start, he had ups and downs until his career gained momentum with the Baltimore Orioles. Between 2023 and 2024, he averaged .275, with 29 home runs and an OPS+ of 120.
During the 2025 season, he was traded to the San Diego Padres, where he maintained his offensive consistency at the end of the campaign. In addition, he demonstrated a notable improvement against left-handed pitchers, with an OPS of .832, significantly surpassing his previous numbers.
With this addition, the Pirates seek to strengthen their offense and add experience to their lineup for the upcoming Major League season.
