Pedro Martinez criticizes the Red Sox’s management of Rafael Devers

Hall of Fame member and Boston Red Sox legend, Pedro Martínez, has expressed his opinion on Rafael Devers’ recent departure to the San Francisco Giants. Martínez, known for his frankness, described the situation as a failure in communication within the organization. During his participation in B/R Walkoff Live with Xavier Scruggs, Martinez expressed his disappointment with how the conflict between the player and management was handled publicly, instead of resolving it internally.

The most important thing I’ve realized is that the Red Sox had a great opportunity to keep everything, including Devers’ attitude, internally, among the players, inside the clubhouse, with the baseball people (of the team).

Martínez emphasized that the lack of involvement of figures respected by Devers was a strategic error that could have been avoided.

I think we made a mistake as an organization by letting it get out of hand.

According to Martinez, the relationship between Devers and the team deteriorated due to poor communication and lack of internal management. He emphasized that even Alex Cora, with whom Devers had trust, failed to adequately convey the message to the player. Martínez acknowledged that both sides have taken positive directions: Boston received valuable talent in return, and Devers will have a new beginning in San Francisco.
