Fort Myers – Star Venezuelan pitcher Pablo López, a key piece in the Minnesota Twins’ starting rotation, faces a setback. The team announced this Tuesday that López suffered a “significant tear” in the ulnar collateral ligament of his right elbow.
The injury, which occurred during a live batting practice session on Monday, could require Tommy John-type reconstructive surgery. The pitcher felt discomfort in his arm and had to leave the session early.
An MRI confirmed the severity of the injury. If surgery is necessary, this would be the second Tommy John surgery in López’s career, a procedure that entails a long period of recovery and rehabilitation.
The estimated recovery time and the impact of this injury on the Twins’ starting rotation are still unknown. The team is awaiting further medical evaluations to determine the next steps.
