Shohei Ohtani Sets New Record in the World of Collecting

The global phenomenon of Shohei Ohtani continues to set the standard, this time off the field. An autographed Topps Gold Logoman card of the Los Angeles Dodgers’ star reached an astonishing US$3 million at auction, including the buyer’s premium. This achievement sets a new milestone for the Japanese player’s collectibles. This card, considered one-of-a-kind (1-of-1), features Ohtani’s signature and a patch with the gold logo used on an official uniform, commemorating his award as the 2024 National League Most Valuable Player. This special program was a collaboration between Topps and Major League Baseball to honor the winners of the sport’s major awards. The patch on the card comes from a uniform that Ohtani wore on April 29, 2025, during a game against the Miami Marlins, where he hit his seventh home run of the season. This home run was significant, as it occurred after his return from the paternity list following the birth of his first child. The card was discovered by Pete Anderson and his twin sons, Colton and Henry, in Minneapolis. The family decided to auction it through Fanatics, where bids exceeded one million dollars in the first 24 hours. The sale of the Gold Logoman surpassed the previous record set by the Topps Black Logoman 2024 of Ohtani and became the most expensive Dodgers card ever sold. In addition, it surpassed the “1-of-1” autographed card of rookie Paul Skenes, which was auctioned for US$1.1 million. Historically, this card is positioned among the most valuable of the modern era, surpassed only by the 2019 Bowman Chrome Prospects Superfractor of Mike Trout, which reached US$3.93 million in 2020. However, the most expensive card sold in 2025 remains the 1914 Babe Ruth rookie card, auctioned for US$4.03 million. The buyer of the Gold Logoman has not been revealed. The sellers, the Anderson family, have announced that they will reinvest part of the proceeds in more collectibles and allocate another portion to their children’s college funds. This record price confirms the status of Shohei Ohtani’s collectibles, reflecting his sporting, media, and cultural impact as one of the most important figures in current baseball.
