Kei Nishikori Announces Retirement from Professional Tennis
TOKYO – Japanese tennis player Kei Nishikori has confirmed that he will end his professional career at the end of the current season. The decision comes after several years complicated by injuries that have affected his continuity on the circuit.
The former world number four announced his decision through an official statement, expressing his pride in the path taken. “I have given everything I had. I am happy with the journey and will enjoy every match I have left,” said Nishikori.
At 36 years old, Nishikori acknowledged that the constant physical discomfort has impacted his performance, preventing him from competing at the level he desired. However, he emphasized that his love for tennis was always a driving force to keep going.
During his career, the Japanese tennis player left a significant mark, being the first player from his country to reach a Grand Slam final, an achievement reached at the 2014 US Open. In addition, he reached fourth place in the world ranking in 2015 and won the bronze medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
Nishikori, a professional since 2007, was a prominent figure on the ATP Tour circuit, known for his consistency and competitiveness in the elite of world tennis.
Recently, Nishikori had denied rumors about an immediate retirement, but finally confirmed that this will be his last season as a professional, ending a career full of historical achievements for his country.
