MLB Trade Deadline: Expectations and Strategic Moves

New York – With just hours to go until the MLB Trade Deadline, the tension is palpable. Team executives are immersed in crucial negotiations, seeking the key pieces that will define the course of the 2025 season. Although no superstar transfers like Juan Soto, Max Scherzer, or Manny Machado are expected, the market presents interesting names that could have a significant impact on the playoff race.

It seems quiet so far. Lots of conversations, but I’m not sure any big names are moving.

High prices and caution are the prevailing trends in the market. Several clubs have expressed concern about the high prices of impact players, especially relievers and power hitters. Indecision reigns among the franchises, which have not yet defined whether they will be aggressive buyers, sellers, or if they will stay on the sidelines on this key date. The American League East and National League Central divisions are presenting a close fight for the wild card tickets, which has curbed drastic decisions until the last moment.

The Yankees in the Spotlight

The New York Yankees, after Aaron Judge’s injury, are in a complicated situation. Although they reinforced their offense with the recent acquisition of Ryan McMahon from the Rockies, Judge’s physical condition could redefine their strategy. They are in a complicated situation. A big part of this has to do with how long Judge will actually be out of action. The Eastern Division, with direct rivals like Toronto, Boston, and Tampa Bay, is shaping up to be one of the areas of greatest activity in the coming hours.

Players Under the Spotlight

Among the most mentioned names in trade conversations are pitcher Dylan Cease, Venezuelan Eugenio Suárez (currently injured), Dominican Marcell Ozuna, Luis Robert Jr., and Cedric Mullins. All of them have had mixed campaigns but could represent valuable pieces for teams in contention. Also, among the starting pitchers generating interest are Sandy Alcántara, Zac Gallen, Edward Cabrera, and Luis Severino, although several of them have had inconsistent performance during 2025. In the bullpen section, the market is more active with arms like Ryan Helsley, Raisel Iglesias, Seranthony Domínguez, Kyle Finnegan, and Phil Maton available at moderate prices. In contrast, pitchers with contractual control like Jhoan Durán or Mason Miller could require a considerable offer.

I generally expect a lot of activity, but it will probably be more on the scale of small to medium moves. I don’t think we’ll see any really big player changes.
