PORT ST. LUCIE, USA – Ronny Mauricio, the talented Dominican infielder, has been sent to the Triple-A Syracuse affiliate by the New York Mets. This move was made this Thursday as part of the organization’s adjustments for the start of the 2026 Major League season. Mauricio joins a group of four players who failed to secure a spot on the roster for Opening Day. Among the team’s decisions also included the departure of pitcher Joey Gerber, while pitchers Brandon Waddell and Mike Baumann were reassigned to the minor league camp. The depth of the Mets’ infield has played a key role in this decision. The infield structure is already defined, with Bo Bichette projected to cover the shortstop position in the temporary absence of Francisco Lindor. The presence of Vidal Bruján, also Dominican, on the roster also limited Mauricio’s opportunities.

Looking to Regain the Level

Mauricio, who at one point was considered one of the organization’s top prospects, has seen his development affected in recent years. An injury to the ligaments in his right ankle suffered in the Dominican Republic prevented him from playing the entire 2024 season, which impacted his continuity on the field. In his 61 games in the Major Leagues with the Mets, Mauricio has recorded a batting average of .226. With this reassignment, Mauricio will start the season in Triple A, with the goal of regaining his best form and seeking a new opportunity on the big team during the season.
