Gilbert Gómez Ascends to Mets Coach: A New Chapter in His Career

The New York Mets have announced the appointment of Gilbert Gómez as first base and outfield coach for the upcoming Major League season, a move that underscores the growth of one of the most promising young coaches in the organization. This decision highlights the leadership, effective communication with emerging talent, and modern vision of the game that characterize Gómez, who has become a key piece within the Mets’ development system. Gómez began his professional career in 2009 when he was signed by the Mets, and in 2012 he was selected by the Tigres del Licey in the Rookie Draft. In 2017, at just 25 years old, he decided to end his career as a player to dedicate himself entirely to training and technical direction.

In the development area, Gómez served as hitting coach of the Rookie League in 2021. A year later, he took on the role of bench coach for St. Lucie (Class A), a position that led to his promotion in 2023 as manager of the team. His rise continued in 2025, when he was crowned champion of the South Atlantic League at the helm of the Brooklyn Cyclones, Advanced Class A affiliate, achieving the franchise’s first title in that circuit and the third in its history. Under his command, the Cyclones set a record of 72 wins in the regular season and a perfect postseason (4-0). That same year, Gómez was selected as manager of the “Breakout Game” of the MLB preseason, facing his colleague and bench coach of the Licey team, Héctor Borg. In addition, he was named assistant to manager Albert Pujols for the upcoming World Baseball Classic, and previously was part of the Dominican coaching staff that won bronze in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, where he served as batting and third base coach. With the Tigres del Licey, Gómez is entering his fifth season, an organization where he has held positions from quality control coach to manager. He led the club to the 2023-24 championship and two consecutive Finals Series, becoming the youngest champion manager in LIDOM history at 31 years and 324 days, surpassing the record of Audo Vicente (33 years and 175 days in 2012-13). Gómez also became the seventh native manager in the history of the Dominican league to win a title in his debut season, joining Fernando Tatis Sr., Audo Vicente, José Offerman, Félix Fermín, Tony Peña and Miguel Diloné.
