Bob Melvin Returns to the Oakland Athletics in a New Role

Mesa, Arizona – The Oakland Athletics have announced the hiring of Bob Melvin as a special assistant to baseball operations. In this role, Melvin will advise the front office directly on baseball matters.

Melvin’s connection with the Athletics has deep roots. Since his childhood, he attended games to see his idol Sal Bando and the team of the 1970s. This relationship was strengthened during his successful tenure as the team’s manager between 2011 and 2021.

Throughout his career, Melvin became one of the most outstanding managers in the history of the franchise.

With 64 years old, Melvin holds the second place in victories as a manager of the Athletics, with 853 wins. He is only surpassed by Connie Mack, who achieved 3,582 victories.

During his ten seasons at the helm of the team, Melvin guided the Athletics to six postseason appearances, including three divisional titles and three wild card classifications. In addition, he was twice recognized as Manager of the Year.

After his time in Oakland, Melvin managed the San Diego Padres between 2022 and 2023, and subsequently the San Francisco Giants in the 2024 and 2025 seasons.

In total, the experienced manager has a record of 1,678 wins and 1,588 losses in 22 seasons, including a Manager of the Year award with the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2007.
