McLaren Sets the Pace in Austria: Norris Leads, Alonso and Sainz Fight

Lando Norris leads final free practice in Austria

British driver Lando Norris, at the wheel of a McLaren, stood out as the fastest in the last free practice session for the Austrian Grand Prix. The competition, which takes place at the Red Bull Ring circuit in Spielberg, is the eleventh race of the Formula 1 World Championship.

Norris outperformed his teammate, Australian Oscar Piastri, who currently leads the championship. Dutch Max Verstappen, four-time world champion, finished in third position.

Spaniards Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin) and Carlos Sainz (Williams) achieved the twelfth and fifteenth best times, respectively. Franco Colapinto, representing Argentina with Alpine, finished in nineteenth position.

Norris completed the 4.318-meter circuit in a time of 1 minute, 4 seconds, and 324 milliseconds. He beat Piastri by 118 milliseconds and Verstappen by 210.

Alonso, two-time world champion, recorded his best lap nine tenths of a second behind Norris’s time. Sainz, for his part, was one second behind Norris’s time.

Piastri leads the championship with 198 points, followed by Norris with 176. Verstappen is in third place.

The qualifying session, which will determine the starting grid for Sunday’s race, will begin at four in the afternoon (14:00 GMT).
