Miami Marlins to Resume Contract Extension Negotiations with Eury Pérez

The Miami Marlins plan to resume talks to extend the contract of young Dominican pitcher Eury Pérez this winter. After a first approach during the preseason, while the right-hander was recovering from Tommy John surgery, the team will seek to ensure the continuity of its promising talent.

Although an agreement was not reached before the start of the 2025 season, sources close to the team indicate that the club will contact the pitcher’s representatives in the coming weeks. This initiative is part of a broader strategy by the Marlins, who are also negotiating with All-Star outfielder Kyle Stowers, seeking to secure their key players for the long term.

Competitive Ambitions and Reinforcements

After adding 17 victories during the 2025 season and staying in the fight for the postseason until the last instances, the Marlins feel prepared to accelerate their competitive process. The management contemplates reinforcing the squad through free agency, while ensuring continuity with a roster of 40 players under contractual control for at least two more seasons. Eury Pérez, soon to turn 23, will not be eligible for arbitration until after 2026 and will remain under team control until 2029. His situation makes him an exceptional case among pitchers who receive early contract extensions.

Outstanding Performance and Key Statistics

In his return after Tommy John surgery, the right-hander reaffirmed his potential as a future star, showing an effectiveness of 4.25, a WHIP of 1.049, and an average of 9.9 strikeouts per nine innings in 20 starts. He finished the season in great form, accumulating 33 strikeouts and only four walks in his last four outings. According to Baseball Savant data, his fastball averaged 97.9 mph, placing him in the 94th percentile of the league, in addition to excelling in contact statistics and advanced metrics.

Meteoric Rise in Baseball

Signed for US$200,000 in 2019, Pérez advanced quickly through the Minor League system and debuted on May 12, 2023, becoming the youngest player to pitch for the Marlins, surpassing José Fernández’s record. At 20 years old, he was already shaping up to be one of baseball’s top prospects. During his rookie season, he recorded an outstanding 3.15 ERA, a 149 ERA+, and 10.6 K/9 in 91.1 innings, finishing seventh in the National League Rookie of the Year voting.
