LONDON – English footballer Harry Maguire, currently with Manchester United and a member of the England national team, has been sentenced by a Greek court to 15 months in prison, although the sentence is suspended.
This sentence stems from the incidents that occurred in August 2020 on the island of Mykonos.
The verdict was issued by a court on the island of Syros, which found Maguire guilty of assault, attempted bribery, and resisting authority.
Since the sentence is suspended, the player shall not serve time in prison, as long as he does not incur future offenses.
The events date back to the summer of 2020, when the defender was involved in a dispute outside an establishment during his vacation in Greece.
Initially, Maguire was sentenced to 21 months and ten days of suspended imprisonment in the same year. However, after an appeal, the process was annulled, and a retrial was ordered.
The second judicial process suffered several postponements until the new verdict was finally issued.
The player’s legal team has stated its intention to appeal the decision again, reiterating that Maguire has consistently denied the charges against him.
Maguire was not present in Greece during the reading of the sentence.
According to sources, he is expected to be able to rejoin Manchester United’s discipline as normal and be available for Premier League matches.
The case remains open to higher instances following the announcement of a new appeal by the footballer’s defense.
