Luis Castillo leads group of Dominican pitchers for the World Baseball Classic

Right-handed pitcher Luis Castillo heads the list of six pitchers that the Dominican Republic national team has in reserve for the World Baseball Classic, which is scheduled to begin on March 4. The Dominican leader, Albert Pujols, plans to start with a rotation of starters made up of Christopher Sánchez, Brayan Bello, Luis Severino, and Sandy Alcántara. However, Castillo is emerging as the main option within the Designated Pitchers Group (DPP), a strategic resource to strengthen the pitching staff after the first round of the tournament. In addition to Castillo, the Dominican team has other right-handed pitchers available as additional options during the championship.

How does the DPP system work?

According to a published analysis, each federation can register up to six pitchers to be called up after the initial phase. Teams can substitute up to four pitchers after the first round and a maximum of two after the quarter-finals, provided they are included in the registered group.

This system provides greater strategic flexibility to managers, allowing adjustments based on performance, injuries, or wear and tear on the pitchers’ bodies.
