Francisco Lindor will undergo surgery and be out for six weeks

New York Mets star shortstop Francisco Lindor will undergo surgery on his left hand to address an overload reaction in the hamate bone. The news was confirmed by manager Carlos Mendoza, following the player’s medical evaluation last Tuesday. It is estimated that Lindor will be out of action for approximately six weeks. According to David Stearns, the team’s president of baseball operations, Lindor recently began to feel discomfort. Despite this, the organization maintains an optimistic attitude about his recovery and hopes he will be ready for the start of the regular season on March 26, when the Mets face the Pirates at Citi Field. At 32 years old, Lindor has demonstrated a remarkable ability to recover, despite the various injuries he has suffered in recent years. In the last four seasons, he has averaged 158 games played, showing his consistency. Last October, he underwent surgery on his right elbow, which prevented him from participating in the World Baseball Classic. In addition, he played a large part of the 2025 season with a fractured toe and had back problems towards the end of 2024. Despite these physical problems, the Puerto Rican player has maintained a high level of performance, establishing himself as one of the most outstanding shortstops in Major League Baseball and finishing among the top ten in voting for the National League Most Valuable Player award in each season since 2022. While Lindor recovers, the Mets have several experienced options at the position within their 40-man roster, including Dominicans Ronny Mauricio and Vidal Bruján. They could also consider Christian Arroyo, Jackson Cluff, and Grae Kessinger, who are off the roster, to cover the shortstop position during his absence.
