Juan Soto wins Juan Marichal Award 2025 and aims for the World Baseball Classic

The New York Mets’ star outfielder, Juan Soto, was awarded the Juan Marichal Award this Sunday, a recognition that celebrates the Dominican player with the best performance in the 2025 Major League season. Soto, who received the award from Marichal himself, the first Dominican to be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame, expressed his gratitude for being considered for this prestigious recognition of his work in the field.

Soto, known as ‘the Beast’, also obtained this distinction the previous year, becoming the first Dominican player to receive this award twice. Marichal, whose name honors this award for his successful career in baseball, was honored to present the recognition to Soto, highlighting him as a role model for Dominican youth.

In his first season with the Mets, after signing a record $760 million contract, Soto hit 43 home runs, drove in 105 runs, and scored 120 times, with a batting average of .263. These statistics placed him among the finalists for the National League Most Valuable Player award.

World Baseball Classic

During the ceremony, when asked about his possible participation in next year’s World Baseball Classic, Soto stated that he is ready to represent the Dominican Republic.

The prominent left-handed hitter prepares for his second participation with the Dominican team in this international tournament. Regarding his possible participation with the Tigres del Licey, in the Dominican Republic Professional Baseball League (Lidom), Soto indicated that he has already requested permission to play in Dominican territory, but the final decision depends on the Mets. In this edition of the Juan Marichal award, honorary mentions were given to former players Luis Castillo and Sammy Sosa, for their induction into the Hall of Fame of the Miami Marlins and the Chicago Cubs in Major League Baseball. Also, Vladimir Guerrero Jr., first baseman for the Toronto Blue Jays, was recognized with an honorable mention for being named Most Valuable Player of the 2025 American League Championship Series.
