Jeremy Peña, significant absence for the Dominican Republic in the World Baseball Classic
Santo Domingo – The Dominican baseball team has suffered a hard blow a few hours before its debut in the 2026 World Baseball Classic. Shortstop Jeremy Peña suffered a fractured finger, which will prevent him from participating, at least, in the first round of the tournament.
The news was announced by journalist Dionisio Soldevila through his X account.
The player is expected to undergo additional medical evaluations to determine the exact recovery time. His possible participation in a potential second round will depend on his progress in the coming days.
Peña’s absence represents a considerable impact on the Dominican team’s defensive structure. The player was projected as a fundamental piece in the infield, as well as being an important element in the offense.
His absence will force the coaching staff to make adjustments to the lineup for the start of the tournament.
The Dominican team is scheduled to debut this Friday in Miami, with high expectations of advancing in a competitive group. Peña’s injury adds to the challenges facing the tricolor team in their goal of conquering the world title.
The team’s management has not yet announced whether they will call up a substitute to fill the vacancy on the roster.
