Jen Pawol Makes History in the Major Leagues

This Sunday, the baseball world witnessed a momentous occasion: Jen Pawol became the first woman to assume the role of home plate umpire in a regular season Major League game. The historic encounter took place at Truist Park, where the Atlanta Braves faced the Miami Marlins. Pawol, who had already debuted in the MLB the previous day, demonstrated his worth and determination in this new milestone. The match, which ended with a 7-1 victory for the Bravos, was marked by emotion and recognition of Pawol’s feat. In the fourth inning, during a visit to the mound of the Braves’ pitching coach, Rick Kranitz, the fans present in the stadium interrupted the game with applause in honor of Pawol.

“It’s been a whirlwind,” the umpire commented to the coach, who did not hesitate to congratulate her: “She handled it excellently. This only happens once in history and it’s incredible.”
