With just weeks to go until the final qualifying phase, the excitement intensifies. Six teams are preparing to compete for the remaining two spots in the FIFA World Cup 2026, through the intercontinental play-off organized by FIFA. The expansion of the World Cup to 48 teams has transformed the repechage format, providing a last chance to the national teams that did not achieve direct qualification in the qualifiers.

Participants and Format

The repechage tournament will bring together six teams from five confederations: one representative from CONMEBOL, one from AFC, one from CAF, one from OFC, and two from CONCACAF. The competition system will be developed in two key phases:
  • The two best-ranked teams in the FIFA world ranking will advance directly to the final round.
  • The remaining four teams will face each other in an initial knockout phase.
  • The winners of these matches will compete in the decisive round against the two seeded teams.
  • Each final match will award a direct ticket to the World Cup.

Headquarters and Key Dates

The repechage will take place in Mexico at the end of March 2026. The matches will be played at the BBVA Stadium and the Akron Stadium. The semi-finals are scheduled for March 26, while the final matches, which will define the qualifiers, will be played on March 31. In total, four matches will be played: two in the initial phase and two in the final round. The winners of these final matches will secure the remaining two spots for the tournament. The 2026 FIFA World Cup, jointly hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada, promises to be the largest edition in the history of the championship.
