INEFI Recognizes Young Chess Player Pan-American Two-Time Champion

Santo Domingo – The National Institute of Physical Education (INEFI), through its executive director, Alberto Rodríguez Mella, paid tribute to the talented chess player Ángel Sebastián Lara Santos, who was crowned two-time champion in the recent Pan American School Chess Championship held in Brazil. The recognition ceremony took place during a visit by students from Colegio San Pio X to the INEFI headquarters. Ángel Lara Santos, accompanied by professors Braulio Ramírez and Danold Valdez, along with students Arthur Moronta, Endry Félix Núñez, Obed Manuel Alcántara Amparo, and Emil Rijo, were the protagonists of this emotional encounter.

“For his talent and dedication, we present this plaque to Ángel Lara Santos for being an example of discipline, intelligence and passion for the sport of science”, emphasized Rodríguez.

Rodríguez Mella urged students to continue combining study with sports practice, thus promoting a healthy lifestyle and avoiding harmful behaviors. The director of INEFI highlighted the outstanding career of Lara Santos, emphasizing his achievements both nationally and internationally. He underlined that the young chess player is a product of the X National School Sports Games Barahona 2023, organized by INEFI, where he began his international competitive path.

“From the Barahona Games, the institution has accompanied Ángel in his development and participation in various events, we hope that you will also work hard in your studies and the sport you practice”, highlighted Rodríguez.

In addition, Rodríguez Mella announced that INEFI will provide equipment and maintain the sports facilities of the San Pio X School.

Achievements of Ángel Lara Santos

Ángel Lara Santos demonstrated his skill by winning in the Blitz and Rapid (U13) modalities of the championship, establishing himself as a promising figure in regional chess.
  • In the Blitz mode, Lara Santos accumulated 7.5 points out of 9 possible, securing the championship.
  • In the Rapid mode, she achieved a perfect victory with seven out of seven, including an outstanding win against Paraguayan candidate master Enzo Mathias Vinales González.
In the event, Alejandro Muñoz (U11), Central American and Caribbean champion, and the brothers Bruno and Lucas Almonte (U9 and U17), also represented the country, under the direction of international master José Lisandro Muñoz, captain of the delegation. The Dominican delegation obtained three medals in total, two gold medals with Ángel Lara and a bronze medal with Bruno Almonte in the U9 Rapid category. The Pan American School Chess Championship is held in Blitz, Rapid, and Standard modalities, following the Swiss system and the regulations of the International Chess Federation (FIDE).
