Ildemaro Vargas: Historic Hitting Streak in the Majors
Venezuelan Ildemaro Vargas continues to shine at the start of the Major League season, extending his impressive streak of consecutive games hitting to 24. Despite the Arizona Diamondbacks’ 6-5 loss to the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field, Vargas became the center of attention. Vargas quickly proved his worth, connecting a single in his first at-bat. Throughout the game, he added three more hits, including one that drove in runs. In addition, he managed to negotiate a walk in the ninth inning. He finished the day with a batting average of .404, the highest in the league. This outstanding performance earned Vargas his fourth four-hit game of his career and the third time he reached base five times in the same game, confirming his excellent offensive form. With this streak of 24 games, Vargas reaches the second-longest mark to start a season since 1940, surpassed only by Ron LeFlore’s 30 games in 1976. If the games from last season are considered, Vargas has a streak of 27 consecutive games with a hit, the longest active streak in MLB. The Venezuelan also surpassed the record of his compatriot Wilson Ramos, who in 2019 achieved 26 consecutive games with a hit. In the franchise’s history, the 24-game streak equals the second-longest in a single season for Arizona, tying with Tony Womack and only surpassed by Luis González’s 30 games.Vargas, in his third stage with Arizona, is living the best moment of his career in the Major Leagues, consolidating himself as one of the most consistent figures at the start of this season. He has earned this moment. Everything is the result of his work and dedication.
