The incident that led to Sainz’s penalty involved the young Italian driver Andrea Kimi Antonelli, from Mercedes. Sainz was trying to overtake Antonelli when contact occurred between the two single-seaters, resulting in the Spanish driver’s retirement. The race stewards determined that Sainz was responsible for the incident, which occurred on the seventh lap of the 56 that were contested at the Circuit of the Americas, in Austin, Texas.

Sainz, who already has four victories and 28 podium finishes in his Formula 1 career, had achieved a third place in Saturday’s sprint race.
