Leones del Escogido defeat Águilas Cibaeñas in the Cibao
Santiago de los Caballeros. – Los Leones del Escogido consiguió una importante victoria 5-2 sobre las Águilas Cibaeñas este domingo en el Estadio Cibao, sumando así su sexto triunfo en el Todos contra Todos del campeonato.
Pitcher Conner Greene was key to the scarlet triumph, with a solid performance from the mound. In five innings, Greene allowed only one hit, gave one walk and struck out two batters. The only run he tolerated came in the second inning.
With this victory, the Lions improved their record to 6-1, solidifying their position at the top of the Round Robin. For their part, the Eagles, with a 3-4 record, remain in third position.
The Escogido took the lead in the second inning, scoring two runs against pitcher Abdiel Mendoza. Junior Lake and José Marmolejos hit singles, and a double by Jorge Mateo drove in Lake. Mateo scored later thanks to a sacrifice bunt by Elier Hernández.
In the fifth inning, the red offense struck again. Socrates Brito hit a double that drove in Erik Gonzalez, and then Lake drove in another run with a ground ball to the shortstop, making the score 4-1.
The Eagles scored a run in the eighth inning, but in the bottom of that inning, a double by Raimel Tapia brought Jonathan Guzmán from first base to home plate, in a play that was reviewed and overturned by the umpires.
The referee’s decision caused a brief interruption of the game because some fans threw objects onto the field. After the restart, an altercation occurred between Jean Henríquez and Erik González, resulting in González’s expulsion.
Mendoza took the loss, while Stephen Nogosek earned the save.
For the Lions’ offense, Jorge Mateo went 2-for-3, with two doubles, one RBI, one run scored, a walk, and a stolen base; Socrates Brito went 1-for-4, with a double, one RBI, one run scored, and a walk; Junior Lake finished 1-for-5, with one RBI and one run scored, and Erik Gonzalez went 2-for-4, with one run scored.
For the Eagles, Cristhian Adames hit 2-3, with one RBI, one run scored, and a walk, while Aderlin Rodriguez went 1-3, with a walk.
The next game for the Leones del Escogido will be this Monday against the Toros del Este at the Quisqueya Juan Marichal Stadium, starting at 4:00 PM.
