Eric García extends his contract with FC Barcelona

FC Barcelona has announced the renewal of Eric García, extending his contract for five more seasons, until June 30, 2031. The news was confirmed this Friday by the Blaugrana entity. The official signing will take place next Thursday, December 11, at 1:30 p.m. Afterwards, the player will address the media. Trained at La Masia, Eric García had several offers to leave the club, including one from PSG managed by Luis Enrique, but he chose to accept the renewal. At the beginning of this season, García has been one of the most used players by the coach. The defender has known how to take advantage of every opportunity that has been presented to him. When Jules Kounde had problems at right-back, Eric was present. Likewise, when Araujo or Christensen did not have the coach’s confidence, the player from Martorell partnered with Pau Cubarsí. In the event of injuries to Frenkie de Jong or Pedri, Eric García has played, and very well, in the midfield. He was even deployed as a left-back in a match against Real Sociedad. In total, Eric García has played 1,510 minutes, 1,145 in LaLiga and 365 in the Champions League, distributed across 20 matches. Of these, he has played eleven times as a center-back, five as a right-back, three as a defensive midfielder, and once as a left wing-back. He is the most used player, surpassing Jules Kounde, who has played almost one hundred minutes less (1,415), and other players like Rashford (1,248), Lamine Yamal (1,237), Frenkie de Jong (1,214) and Pedri (1,203). Eric García, trained in the Barcelona youth academy, has developed his game in other clubs. He spent three seasons at Manchester City under Pep Guardiola, where he played 35 matches. He returned to Barça in the summer of 2021 and, after a first stage with less prominence, was loaned to Girona of Míchel Sánchez in the 23-24 season. At Girona, he was key, playing 31 matches, scoring five goals, and showing a significant leap in quality. His performance was excellent in a historic season for Girona, which qualified for the Champions League for the first time. Despite Girona’s interest in acquiring him, Eric García returned to Barça. He played 45 matches and scored five goals, including an important one in the Clásico against Real Madrid. His performance continues along the same lines this season.
