Draw at the Start: Dominican Republic Women’s Team Ties with Suriname in Concacaf Qualifiers
MOCA – The Dominican Republic Women’s National Football Team debuted in the 2025-26 Concacaf Women’s Qualifiers with a 2-2 draw against Suriname. The match, held this Tuesday at the Moca 85 Stadium, was a vibrant clash that marked the beginning of the road to the FIFA Women’s World Cup Brazil 2027 and the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
Forward Mia Asenjo stood out as the key figure for the Dominican team, scoring the two goals (16′ and 85′) that allowed the team led by coach Betzaida Urbi to come back from an adverse start and secure the first point in the tournament.
The match began with Suriname taking the lead thanks to goals from Isabelle Hoekstra (3′) and Chante-Marie Domping (5′), who put the Dominican team in trouble. However, the Dominican selection showed its determination by equalizing the score and adding a valuable point at home.
With this result, the Dominican Republic is in Group D, adding one point. Suriname leads the group with 4 points, followed by Haiti with 3. Anguilla and Belize have not yet added points.
The next challenge for the Dominican Republic national team will be on February 27, 2026, when they host Belize in Dominican territory. Subsequently, they will visit Anguilla on March 5, 2026, and will close the qualifying phase on April 16, 2026, facing Haiti as visitors.
The 2025-26 Concacaf Women’s Qualifiers are part of the road to the World Cup, which includes the 2026 Concacaf Women’s Championship. In this tournament, four direct tickets and two spots for the intercontinental play-off for the 2027 World Cup in Brazil will be at stake, as well as two direct places for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic tournament.
