DR Defeats USA and Leads Group A Towards the 2027 Basketball World Cup

SANTO DOMINGO, RD. – The Dominican Republic national team achieved a crucial victory by defeating the United States with a score of 87-79, a result that creates a three-way tie at the top of Group A during the Second Qualifying Window for the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027. The exciting match took place at the Frontwave Arena, located in Oceanside, California.

Jassel Pérez was the key figure in the Dominican offense, with a stellar performance that included 20 points, 10 rebounds and four assists, achieving a double-double. Anderson García also had an outstanding performance with 14 points and six rebounds. Jhery Matos and Gelvis Solano contributed 13 points each, with Solano adding eight assists. Ángel Luis Delgado contributed 11 points and eight rebounds.

United States Responds

For the American team, Brandon Knight led the offense with 20 points, followed by Dakota Mathias with 12 units. James Wiseman and Elfrid Payton Jr. scored nine points each.

Group A Situation

With this result, the Dominican Republic, the United States, and Mexico share the lead in Group A, each with a 2-1 record. It is anticipated that these three teams will advance to the next qualifying phase, while Nicaragua faces a difficult situation having not achieved any victories (0-3). On the same day, Mexico defeated Nicaragua with a score of 99-72 at the Alexis Argüello Sports Center in Managua. The next Dominican Republic match will be against Nicaragua this Sunday, March 1st at 9:30 PM (Dominican time).
