Dominican Republic and Suriname to face each other in the 2025 Gold Cup

With their sights set on a victory to crown their historic participation, the national teams of the Dominican Republic and Suriname will face each other this Sunday in the closing of Group A of the 2025 Gold Cup, a Concacaf tournament held in the United States.

For the Dominican team, a victory would represent more than three points; it would be the culmination of an outstanding performance that has captured the attention of the continent. It is the first time that the Dominican Republic competes in this tournament, and it has done so with courage and a constantly growing football.

The team, led by Marcelo “el Ruso” Neveleff, has known how to combine local talent with players born abroad with Dominican roots, such as Peter Federico González and Edison Azcona, who shone in their debut against Mexico with goals that put one of the regional powers in trouble. Despite the 3-2 defeat, they left a pleasant impression.

In their next match against Costa Rica, the Dominicans once again demonstrated their competitiveness. A goal by Joao Urbáez put the Dominicans ahead, although they ultimately lost 2-1, showing their composure against another of the region’s greats.

For the match against Suriname, the tricolor team will not be able to count on Edison Azcona, who suffered a muscle injury in his left leg during training.

For their part, Suriname also arrives with the aim of obtaining victory. In their debut, they were close to surprising Costa Rica in an exciting match that ended 4-3 in favor of the Ticos. Subsequently, they fell 2-0 to Mexico, although their goalkeeper Etienne Vaessen stood out with nine saves so far in the tournament.

Both teams have shown commitment and attractive offensive play, so a balanced duel is expected, where defenses could be decisive. Historically, the Dominican Republic and Suriname have faced each other twice in World Cup qualifiers, with a 1-1 draw and a Dominican victory of 3-1.

Now, the story presents them with a new opportunity. Beyond the result, both Dominicans and Surinamese will seek to bid farewell to the Gold Cup with their heads held high, demonstrating that their soccer has a present… and a great future.
