Dominican Republic National Team Suffers Traffic Accident in Guatemala
Guatemala City – The Dominican Republic national soccer team experienced a setback on Friday, June 6th. While en route to the Estadio Cementos Progreso for a crucial World Cup qualifying match towards the 2026 World Cup against Guatemala, they suffered a vehicular accident.The bus carrying the players and coaching staff collided with a van on one of the main roads in the Guatemalan capital. The incident occurred amidst heavy rain and congested traffic. Despite no injuries, the situation caused a considerable delay in the team’s arrival at the stadium.
Match Delay Due to Security Protocols
The collision forced the delegation to stop for approximately 25 minutes, generating moments of tension and concern. Local authorities intervened to resolve the incident, while team members remained on the bus.
Due to the delay, Concacaf and FIFA chose to postpone the start of the match, which was originally scheduled for 8:00 p.m., rescheduling it for 8:30 p.m. local time. The Dominican Republic national team entered the sports venue at 7:34 p.m., just in time to perform minimal warm-ups before the start of the match.
Complaint for Lack of Police Accompaniment
Through social media, members of the Dominican Football Federation and present media expressed their concern about the absence of a police escort during the journey to the stadium, which could have contributed to the incident. They also expressed their concern about the logistical and security conditions provided by the local organization.
