MADRID – Serbian tennis star Novak Djokovic has announced his departure from the Professional Tennis Players Association (PTPA), an organization created to defend the interests of professional tennis players. The decision, communicated this Sunday, is based on significant discrepancies related to transparency, governance, and the management of its image within the entity.
A Farewell Grounded in Principles
Through a statement issued on its social media, the winner of 24 Grand Slam titles confirmed his definitive retirement from the union he co-founded in 2021 with Canadian tennis player Vasek Pospisil. The PTPA, which brings together about 500 players from the ATP and WTA circuits, thus loses one of its most prominent promoters.“After deep reflection, I have decided to completely withdraw from the Association of Tennis Professionals. This decision is in response to persistent concerns about transparency, governance, and the way my voice and image have been represented,”
DjokovicDjokovic, 38 years old, explained that, although he feels proud of the project that gave rise to the PTPA and its objective of strengthening the independent voice of the players, he considers that its principles no longer align with the current direction of the organization. The Serbian tennis player, who plans to start his season on January 12th in the Adelaide tournament as preparation for the Australian Open, assured that he will remain focused on his sporting career and his family life. Djokovic concluded by expressing his wish for success for the players and all involved, stating that this chapter has come to an end.“I shared a clear vision with Vasek when founding the association, but it has become evident that my values and my approach are no longer aligned with the direction the union has taken,”
