Capitalino Domain in Women’s Volleyball and Costa Rica’s Success in Basketball Opens Santo Domingo 2026 Women’s Games

Santo Domingo – The volleyball team of the National District started their participation in the Women’s Games Santo Domingo 2026 with strength, defeating the team from La Vega in straight sets. The final score was 25-14 and 25-10, demonstrating the superiority of the capital team. Harleny de los Santos led the offense with 15 points, followed by Yamil Moya, who contributed seven points to the victory. In another volleyball match, San Cristóbal defeated La Romana in an exciting three-set game. The scores were 25-7, 23-25, and 15-5. Virelys Rivera shone with an outstanding performance, accumulating 26 points.

Costa Rica Splits Honors in Basketball

In the discipline of basketball, the Costa Rican team had a mixed day, winning and losing against Dominican teams in the first day of the tournament, held in the newly inaugurated multi-purpose hall of Ciudad Juan Bosch. In the first encounter, the Costa Ricans defeated Dominican Republic A with a score of 50-42. María Montero, Costa Rica’s pivot, was the key figure with 17 points, seven rebounds, and five assists. Adriana Zúñiga and Fernanda Gómez contributed nine points each. In the second game, Dominican Republic B recovered and defeated Costa Rica 55-53. Katherin Sena led Dominican Republic B with 15 points, followed by Audrei Peña with 14 points. Vanessa Bau contributed five points and 13 rebounds for the winning team. The international fair, which brings together some 680 athletes, was inaugurated on Thursday and will run until next Sunday, marking its return after a 10-year hiatus by the Ministry of Sports and Recreation. The Women’s Sports Games are dedicated to Mrs. Melba Segura de Grullón, and the Organizing Committee is headed by the world and Olympic champion Marileidy Paulino. The event includes basketball, volleyball, karate, judo, weightlifting, duathlon, athletics, skating, softball, wrestling, and taekwondo competitions.
