Diamondbacks Bolster Roster with Nolan Arenado in a Stellar Move

The Arizona Diamondbacks have shaken up the MLB market by acquiring star third baseman Nolan Arenado, through a trade agreed with the St. Louis Cardinals, as announced by both organizations this Tuesday. In the exchange, St. Louis will receive right-handed pitcher Jack Martinez, a 22-year-old prospect. This move represents one of the most significant during the offseason. Arenado, 34, approved the trade after deciding not to activate the no-trade clause included in his contract. This facilitates his arrival in Arizona, where he will seek to strengthen the lineup and compete at the highest level in the 2026 season.

An Elite Resume

Considered one of the best third basemen of his generation, Arenado boasts an impressive list of achievements:

  • 10 Gold Gloves
  • 8 All-Star selections
  • 6 Platinum Gloves
  • 5 Silver Bats
  • 3 National League home run titles
His best recent season was in 2022, finishing third in the Most Valuable Player voting, with a batting average of .293, 30 home runs, 103 RBIs, and an OPS of .891. In addition, he won his tenth consecutive Gold Glove.

Outstanding Offensive Production and Defense

Although his offensive numbers have shown a slight decrease in recent years, his defense at third base has remained among the best in baseball. In 2023 and 2024, he connected 26 and 16 home runs, respectively. In 2025, injuries limited his performance to 12 home runs and an OPS of .666 in 107 games.

Financial Commitment

Arenado is owed 42 million dollars in the next two seasons:
  • 27 million in 2026
  • 15 million in 2027
The Colorado Rockies, his former team, will cover five million of the salary corresponding to 2027, according to the terms of the contract. With this acquisition, the Diamondbacks are betting on Arenado’s experience, leadership, and elite defense to strengthen their infield and improve their competitiveness in the upcoming Major League season.
