Latino Dominance in MLB: Devers, Machado, and López Shine on the Day
Sunday’s action in Major League Baseball was marked by the prominence of Latino figures, with stellar performances that lit up the playing fields. Rafael Devers, Manny Machado, and Otto López led the offenses of their respective teams, leaving their mark on a day full of emotions.
In San Francisco, Rafael Devers continued to demonstrate his power by reaching 100 RBIs for the season. This mark represents the fourth time in his career that the Dominican has surpassed one hundred RBIs. Although his team fell to the St. Louis Cardinals (4-3), Devers hit a single, scored a run, and drove in another in four at-bats.
Manny Machado was key in the San Diego Padres’ victory over the Rockies (8-1) in Colorado. The third baseman hit his 23rd home run of the season, an impressive 452-foot hit, driving in three runs. In addition, he scored two runs and walked in four at-bats. His teammate Fernando Tatis Jr. also contributed with a hit.
The most outstanding performance of the day came from Miami, where the Canadian-Dominican Otto López led the Marlins to their victory over the Phillies (5-4). López had an explosive night, hitting two home runs, his numbers 13 and 14 of the season, driving in four runs and scoring twice. His second home run, in the seventh inning, was crucial to secure the victory. This was the first multi-home run game of his career and the sixth Marlins player to achieve this feat this season.
In New York, the Yankees defeated the Blue Jays (4-3). Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit a run-scoring double and added his 33rd double of the season, finishing the game with a hit and an RBI.
Finally, in Baltimore, Shohei Ohtani shone again by hitting two home runs in the Dodgers’ victory over the Orioles (5-2). Ohtani has 48 home runs on the year and reached his 12th home run leading off a game, tying Mookie Betts’ historical record.
