Devers Refuses to Play at First Base and Questions Red Sox Management

The stellar Dominican player for the Boston Red Sox, Rafael Devers, has made his position clear regarding his role on the team. In recent statements, the third baseman confirmed that he will not play at first base, rejecting the management’s proposal.

The position change request came from Craig Breslow, the club’s chief baseball operations officer, due to the injury of Triston Casas, who will be out for the rest of the season. However, Devers, currently a designated hitter, refused the proposal.

I don’t think that, for me personally, it’s the best decision… I’ve only been playing here for two months to be asked to try playing somewhere else.

The situation generated some confusion, as manager Alex Cora stated that the issue had not been discussed with the player. Devers, however, contradicted this version, asserting that the conversation with Breslow did take place.

I know I’m a ballplayer, but at the same time, they can’t expect me to play in every position there is.

Además, Devers expresó su frustración con la gerencia, alegando que no se han cumplido los acuerdos iniciales de la temporada.

They told me I was going to play here – designated hitter – and now they’re going back on it. I just don’t think they’re keeping their word.

On the field, Devers has shown great performance, batting .383 with four home runs and 11 RBIs in his last 12 games. Manager Alex Cora attributes this performance to the routine that Devers has established as a designated hitter.

Despite the tensions with management, Devers emphasized that his relationship with his teammates has not been affected. About Breslow, he added: “I am not sure what he has against me. He played ball. I would like to think that he knows that a position change like that is not easy.”
