Cibao Stadium to Honor Miguel “Guelo” Diloné

The Chamber of Deputies has taken a significant step by approving in first reading the bill that will rename the Cibao Stadium, located in Santiago, as the Cibao Miguel “Guelo” Diloné Stadium. The initiative, presented by Representative Nelson Rafael Marmolejos, seeks to recognize the outstanding career of Miguel Diloné, an emblematic figure of Dominican baseball.

“Miguel Diloné is more than an outstanding athlete; his story represents the effort, pride, and identity of the people of Santiago. This designation is a just tribute to a figure who has marked generations,” expressed Marmolejos.

Originally from Santiago de los Caballeros, Diloné debuted in the Major Leagues with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1974. However, his legacy was primarily forged in the Dominican Republic Professional Baseball League (LIDOM), where he played 18 seasons with the Águilas Cibaeñas, being known as “La Saeta Cibaeña” for his speed and playing style. In addition to his career as a player, Diloné also served as a manager for the Cibao team, solidifying a comprehensive career in Dominican baseball. At 70 years old, Diloné has overcome various health problems, including a stroke in 2016 and the loss of his left eye in 2009. Despite these challenges, his legacy endures.

Numbers That Highlight His Career

Miguel Diloné is the second player with the most hits connected in the history of Dominican winter baseball, with a total of 877 hits, only surpassed by Luis Polonia (927). His statistics in the LIDOM are notable:
  • 2,929 at bats
  • 877 hits
  • .299 batting average
  • 395 stolen bases
  • 496 runs scored
  • 213 runs batted in
  • 40 triples and 85 doubles

Next Steps

Following approval in the first reading, the bill must be submitted to a second vote for final validation. If approved again, the Cibao Stadium will bear the name of Miguel “Guelo” Diloné, thus honoring one of its greatest exponents.
