Cristiano Ronaldo: Suspended but Ready for the 2026 World Cup

The Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo has received a sanction from the FIFA Disciplinary Committee, according to sources. The sanction consists of one match already served during the qualifying phase for the 2026 World Cup, specifically against Armenia, and two additional matches, conditional on his future conduct. This means that, in principle, Cristiano Ronaldo will be available to play in the first match of the 2026 World Cup. However, any new disciplinary infraction could affect his participation in the following matches. Cristiano Ronaldo’s expulsion in the match against Ireland, held in Dublin on November 13th, was an unusual event in his career with the national team. The player saw a straight red card for the first time in his 226 matches with the senior team. The expulsion occurred after an aggression against Irish defender Dara O’Shea, sanctioned by Swedish referee Glenn Nyberg, who initially showed a yellow card before resorting to VAR and changing the decision to a red card.
