Steve Cohen Rules Out Naming a Captain for the Mets
PORT ST. LUCIE, Florida – New York Mets owner Steve Cohen has confirmed that there will be no captain on the team under his management. During a session at Clover Park, Cohen explained that this decision is based on his philosophy about the team’s internal dynamics. “As long as I’m the owner, there will be no captain,” he stated, emphasizing his preference for leadership that emanates spontaneously within the locker room. The Mets haven’t had a captain since David Wright, who was captain between 2013 and 2018, retired. In recent years, especially during Spring Training, Francisco Lindor’s name has been considered as a possible candidate due to his leadership and his long-term contract. However, Cohen has indicated that he never considered a formal designation. Cohen also pointed out that the figure of the captain is uncommon in today’s baseball. In the history of the Mets, only Keith Hernandez, Gary Carter, and John Franco have been captains. Currently, only two teams in Major League Baseball have a formal captain: the Yankees with Aaron Judge and the Royals with Salvador Perez. The wardrobe changes every year. I prefer that the group resolves things internally instead of establishing a label.
