Steve Cohen: No Captain on the Mets While He’s the Owner

PORT ST. LUCIE, Florida – New York Mets owner Steve Cohen has made his stance on the team’s captaincy clear. Cohen was emphatic in stating that, as long as he remains at the head of the organization, a captain will not be appointed. This decision, according to Cohen, is based on his vision of how the team should function.

“As long as I’m the owner, there will be no captain”,

Cohen prefers that leadership emerge naturally within the locker room. The Mets haven’t had a captain since David Wright left, who held the position between 2013 and 2018. In recent times, especially during Spring Training, Francisco Lindor’s name has resonated as a possible candidate due to his leadership and long-term contract. However, Cohen never considered a formal designation. Cohen argued that the wardrobe evolves every year and that he prefers the group to manage matters internally rather than establish a label. Furthermore, the businessman highlighted that the figure of the captain is uncommon in current baseball. In the club’s history, apart from Wright, only Keith Hernandez, Gary Carter, and John Franco have been captains. Currently, in Major League Baseball, only two teams have a formal captain: the Yankees with Aaron Judge and the Royals with Salvador Perez.
