Che García returns to coach RD for the 2027 Basketball World Cup

Santo Domingo – The experienced Argentine coach Néstor “Che” García will once again take over the direction of the Dominican Republic’s men’s national basketball team. This appointment marks the beginning of a new cycle for the Quisqueyan team, focusing on the Qualifiers for the 2027 Basketball World Cup in Qatar. García, with his vast experience, will seek to guide the country towards its fourth consecutive participation in a World Cup. Previously, he managed to qualify the team for the editions of Spain 2014, China 2019 and the most recent in 2023, held in Indonesia, Japan and the Philippines. Dominican Republic has a history of five World Cup participations, the first being in 1978.

Qualifying Calendar

The road to Qatar 2027 will begin on Friday, November 28, when the Dominican Republic national team faces Mexico at the Marcelino González Gymnasium in Zacatecas. The match is scheduled for 8:40 p.m. local time, which corresponds to 10:40 p.m. in Santo Domingo. The second match of the qualifying phase will be played at home on Monday, December 1st. The Ricardo Gioriber Arias Volleyball Palace, located in the Juan Pablo Duarte Olympic Center, will be the setting for this important duel. Dominican Republic is part of Group A, along with the United States, Mexico, and Nicaragua. The qualifying process will award seven spots for the selections of America. In the Third Window, scheduled for July 3, 2026, Dominicans will receive the United States at the Virgilio Travieso Soto Sports Palace, currently undergoing remodeling.

Technical Body and Work Structure

The technical staff that will accompany García will be made up of assistants David Díaz, Abraham Disla and Sergio Jiménez. Adenauer Díaz will continue as the fitness coach, and Dr. Gewill Acosta will continue to be the team doctor. The operations group will be led by Junior Páez, general manager of the team and vice president of Fedombal, along with Carlos De León, Director of Operations.

Region Rivals

The 16 teams from America have been divided into four groups:
  • Group A: Dominican Republic, United States, Mexico, and Nicaragua
  • Group B: Puerto Rico, Canada, Bahamas, and Jamaica
  • Group C: Brazil, Venezuela, Colombia, and Chile
  • Group D: Argentina, Uruguay, Panama, and Cuba
With the return of “Che” García and emerging talent, the Dominican team embarks on a new international challenge. The main objective is to secure qualification for Qatar 2027 and maintain the streak of consecutive participations in World Cups.
