The St. Louis Cardinals have announced a two-season contract extension for their manager, Oliver Marmol, with a club option for the 2029 season. The news was confirmed this Sunday and represents a vote of confidence in the management of the Dominican manager. Mármol, 39 years old, was in the last year of the contract he signed in March 2024. Since taking office in 2022, he has accumulated a record of 325 wins and 232 losses, ranking 11th among the managers with the most wins in the history of the franchise. Currently, Mármol is among the managers with the longest continuous tenure in their position in the National League, surpassed only by Dave Roberts of the Los Angeles Dodgers and Torey Lovullo of the Arizona Diamondbacks.
In his first season at the helm of the team, in 2022, Mármol guided the Cardinals to the National League Central Division title with 93 victories, achieving the club’s first divisional championship since 2019. At just 36 years old at the time, he became the youngest manager to lead his team to the postseason since Lou Boudreau did it with Cleveland in 1948. Mármol’s connection with the organization dates back to 2007, when he started as a player in the minor leagues. Subsequently, he worked as a coach and manager in the minors between 2012 and 2016, joining the coaching staff of the major league team in 2017. Finally, he was named manager number 51 in the history of the franchise on October 25, 2021. The Cardinals face the 2026 season in a transition phase, after concluding the previous campaign with a 78-84 record. During the offseason, the club made several significant moves, including the trades of Nolan Arenado, Willson Contreras, Sonny Gray, and Brendan Donovan, with the aim of strengthening their prospect system and building a new competitive core for the future.During the time I’ve known Oli, I’ve seen someone who understands what makes this organization special.
