Punta Cana – The ATP 175 tennis tournament recently held in the country has been a resounding success, according to Jorge Subero Medina, president of Cap Cana. The organization is already looking to the future and aims to raise the level of the competition to host an ATP 250 event. After two years of work to make this project a reality, Subero Medina expressed his satisfaction with the results obtained. The event was supported by the Ministry of Tourism and its minister, David Collado, consolidating sports tourism as a key pillar for the country’s development. It is estimated that the tournament received approximately 20,000 visitors and brought together more than 21 players from over 15 countries. It is important to note that 20 of these tennis players are among the top 100 in the world.

We cannot settle now for having a 175 and staying there.

Subero Medina recalled that, after winning the international tender in Mexico, they built the facilities in a record time of three months, complying with all the requirements of the ATP. The conditions, the environment and the courts are ready, and the company seeks to adapt what is necessary to achieve the highest score required for a 250 tournament.

Social impact, inclusion and sustainability

The tournament also had a significant economic and social impact, generating employment for more than 1,000 people and revitalizing the area with the participation of all hotels and 14 gastronomic points. Inclusion was a fundamental aspect, evidenced through wheelchair tennis demonstrations. In addition, “wild cards” were awarded to three Dominican tennis players to compete alongside the professionals, who also carried out social activities with underprivileged children at the “Fajando un futuro” foundation. In the environmental field, and in collaboration with the Cap Cana Foundation, which protects the corals and sea turtles in the area, the event operated in a 100% sustainable manner, prohibiting the use of single-use packaging.

Designed for sports tourism and foreign investment

Subero Medina explained that the success of the tournament is not a coincidence, as Cap Cana was conceived from its beginnings with sports tourism in mind. Facilities such as a sports marina, the Punta Espada golf course and the Scape Park ecopark have been developed. The destination, which already hosted the PGA Championship in 2008, continues to expand its offer. This world-class infrastructure has been made possible thanks to an investment from the private sector that exceeds 4 billion dollars, supported by the macroeconomic stability and tax incentives offered by the Dominican Republic. As a company with 100% Dominican capital, Cap Cana reaffirms its commitment to the country. “If the Dominican Republic doesn’t do well, we won’t do well either,” concluded Subero Medina, proud of the work done for the development of tourism at the national level.
