Santo Domingo. A few months before the World Baseball Classic, the configuration of the Dominican team continues to generate debate, and one of the names that has captured the most attention is that of Robinson Canó.

Last week, the national team leader, Albert Pujols, confirmed that Canó will not be part of the Dominican roster for the 2026 edition, a decision that ended speculation about a possible fifth consecutive participation of the veteran infielder.

Canó is my brother, but he himself can understand that his time has already passed and that he must give that turn to another player. Perhaps he will receive criticism, but our goal is to structure the best possible roster.

Faced with the fans’ reaction, Cano came forward to clarify that at no time has he publicly requested to be called up to the World Classic, pointing out that his words were misinterpreted. “From the beginning, what I’ve said is that I’m willing to represent my country. With this, I’m not saying or asking to be taken, but if they do, I know it would be to take a turn if the game is open and give rest to one of the starters,” explained Cano. The veteran second baseman specified that, if he were to receive an eventual invitation, he would not be interested in attending in a coaching role, as he remains active as a professional player. However, he indicated that he would also have no problem not taking turns, providing leadership and experience from the dugout. Canó also made it clear that his relationship with Albert Pujols remains intact, ruling out any kind of discomfort due to the statements of the leader. “I see him as an older brother”, he affirmed.

Historical Contribution to the Dominican Title

Canó was a key player in the championship obtained by the Dominican Republic in the 2013 World Baseball Classic, where he was chosen as the Most Valuable Player of the tournament. In that edition, he batted for an average of .469 in eight games, with 15 hits in 32 at-bats, including two home runs and six doubles, in addition to six RBIs and six runs scored. That performance was fundamental for the Dominican team to conquer the title undefeated, a historic achievement in the event. In his statements, Pujols also confirmed that Emilio Bonifacio, captain of the Tigres del Licey, will not be available for the World Baseball Classic. Previously, Bonifacio had expressed his interest in participating as long as it was to contribute from a specific role and not out of emotional commitment. In the current LIDOM season, Bonifacio has a batting average of .096, with an OBP of .175, no RBIs, three stolen bases, and eight runs scored in 73 at-bats.
