Boston Red Sox Bolster Infield with Key Trade
The Boston Red Sox continue to restructure their infield ahead of the start of Spring Training. The team has acquired infielder Caleb Durbin, a finalist for the 2025 National League Rookie of the Year award, in a trade with the Milwaukee Brewers.
As part of the agreement, Boston also receives a selection from Round B of the 2026 Competitive Balance Draft, along with infielders Andruw Monasterio and Anthony Seigler.
Exchange Details
- Red Sox receive:
- INF Caleb Durbin
- INF Andruw Monasterio
- INF Anthony Seigler
- 2026 Draft Selection (Competitive Balance Round B)
- Brewers receive:
- LZ Kyle Harrison
- INF David Hamilton
- LZ prospect Shane Drohan
Caleb Durbin, 25 years old, had an offensive line of .256/.334/.387 last season, playing mainly at third base, second base, and shortstop. This fits with Boston’s strategy of seeking defensive versatility for the 2026 season.
With Trevor Story and Willson Contreras in fixed roles, the second and third base positions are shaping up as areas of rotation. Durbin joins Marcelo Mayer, Isiah Kiner-Falefa (pending physical exam), and Romy González, all capable of playing multiple infield positions.
Despite his stature, Durbin made a notable impact on the Brewers. In 445 at-bats, he hit 11 home runs, 25 doubles, stole 18 bases, and accumulated a bWAR of 2.8, standing out for his strike zone control and offensive consistency.
The main piece sent to Milwaukee is left-hander Kyle Harrison, a former prospect who arrived in Boston in a previous trade. However, the depth of young pitchers left Harrison without a clear spot on the Opening Day roster. Since his debut in 2023, Harrison has an ERA of 4.39 in 42 appearances, 37 as a starter.
Andruw Monasterio, 28, adds depth to Boston’s infield. In 2025, he played 68 games with Milwaukee, batting .270, with nine doubles, four home runs, and 16 RBIs, playing multiple infield positions and occasionally in the outfield. In Triple-A Nashville, he had a .250 average and a .346 on-base percentage.
Anthony Seigler, 26, arrives as a depth option. In his first season in the Major Leagues, he participated in 34 games with the Brewers. The left-handed hitter and switch pitcher was originally selected by the New York Yankees in the first round of the 2018 Draft.
With this move, the Red Sox continue to strengthen their roster for the 2026 season, where the flexibility and depth of the infield will be crucial.
