Blue Jays Bolster Roster with Jesús Sánchez in Trade with Astros

The Toronto Blue Jays have finalized the acquisition of Dominican outfielder Jesús Sánchez from the Houston Astros. The move was made official last Friday, marking a key reinforcement for the Canadian team.

In return, the Astros receive outfielder Joey Loperfido as well, in a transaction that seeks to strengthen both teams for the upcoming season.

Sánchez, 28 years old, had an active participation in the 2025 season, playing in 134 games between the Miami Marlins and the Houston Astros. During that time, he achieved a batting average of .237, an on-base percentage of .304, and a slugging percentage of .395. In addition, he hit 14 home runs, drove in 48 runs, and stole 13 bases. His defensive performance was also notable, accumulating seven Defensive Runs Saved in the outfield.

The outfielder, originally from Higüey, was originally signed by the Tampa Bay Rays in 2014 as an international free agent, and debuted in the Major Leagues in 2020. In his six seasons in MLB, Sánchez has maintained an offensive line of .239/.307/.420, with 73 home runs and 238 RBIs in 580 games.

For his part, Loperfido, 26, split his time in 2025 between Toronto and the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons. In 41 games in the Major Leagues, he batted .333 with an OPS of .879, while in the minor leagues his OPS was .742 in 91 commitments. The left-hander debuted in MLB with Houston in 2024 and has a lifetime average of .248 with 39 RBIs in 122 games between both franchises.
